On 2013-10-16, the
Zhejiang CDC rapidly released a full set of sequences at
GISAID from a
Emergent H7N9 human case sampled from a 35 year old male who resided in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. The sample was taken on October 14, 2013 during hospitalisation. The patient showed no underlying diseases, nor reported any direct contact with poultry. This Shaoxing, Zhejiang patient is indicated as
Case #137 on the 2013 H7N9 Human
Case List maintained by the crowd-sourced
FluTrackers.com.
On 2013-10-18,
Zhejiang University also rapidly released a full set of sequences at
GISAID from the same human case with the same sample collection date. One week later on 2013-10-25, their sequence was updated and renamed.
Neither organisation indicated a passage history for their respective sequences, but the
Zhejiang University sequences manifested additional polymorphisms.
The
antigens are
identical, but the
Polymerase Complex varies between the two laboratories. A
novel HA 222P was confirmed by the
Zhejiang University deposit. Although the
Polymerase vary, these human sequences do share homology at the
PB2 627E, generally an avian value. The
Polymerase Acidic segments are identical, but the
Zhejiang University PB2 and
PB1 segments demonstrate polymorphisms not found on the
Zhejiang CDC segments.
The
Zhejiang CDC issued a
press release indicating in translation at Crawford Kilian's H5N1
site that "
no significant variation" was found on this case. On our detailed examination of the sequence, variation is in evidence. Perhaps
novelty on
Antigens is not considered "
significant" by the expert official delivering the public relations missive. A

Polymerase Complex against the recent human sequences
demonstrates what we consider to be
significant variation within circulating
Emergent H7N9.
The sequences from this October 2013 Zhejiang case do
not resemble the genetics from the two current human sequences that border on the calendar, Guangdong
Huizhou1 at 2013_08_10 & HongKong
5942 at 2013_11_30.
